How early should my Down syndrome daughter start early intervention?

I hear soon after birth but I’d hate to stress her out especially with her getting heart surgery in 5 weeks. Thanks!

my lil one doesnt have down syndrome but does have heart defect and had 5 open heart surgeries, but she need help too but i waited after her first surgery and after hospital stay we where in there 5 months from birth to 5 months old then she did some help in hospital but alot once home so she didnt fall to far behind

I’m a special ed teacher. You should start the process as soon as possible because the paperwork and application etc. is very time consuming for a lot of parents. Once you apply and are approved they will outline a plan for you they think is appropriate you have ultimate say in if you think it’s too much. You can’t force them to give you more services but can always opt to start smaller. I would advise to take any services offered to you at no or low cost because it’s often hard for some parents to qualify. I have seen a really large difference in parents who do early intervention and continue service in the home outside of school versus kiddos who dont get that access. Just a thought. You can always opt out later but it may be hard to get them back.

I think you can speak to the specialist who will be working with your daughter, discuss the fact that she will be recovering from a major surgery, and ask what you can do at home to help her in the meantime. At birth early intervention is not like... baby boot camp. I think a consultation and making a plan of action should happen sooner rather than later, so you know what early intervention looks like for her.
