Who/what is a midwife?

Wait what are midwifes THAT uncommon in USA?

They are the ones who deliver babies in the majority of cases where I live. An obstetrician will only deliver if it's via c section or a complication. They are responsible for pre and postnatal care of you and bub. In the USA I think they have more assistants that midwives. LAD or labour and delivery nurses which is similar as they give care to women in labour but they don't deliver the babies. Check out the UK show called "the midwives"

I'm still new to midwives but mine basically said they will be at my bedside more than a doctor. They are going to be doing all of my checkups. They will deliver my baby unless I need a c-section which a doctor will have to perform. I think the main difference is the nurturing and attention that you get will be more from a midwife than a doctor.

Im not sure what the actual demographics are, but I'm really grateful  to live in an area where we have tons of nurse-midwives. 
Though, based on the unnecessary c-section rates going up (I mean coerced moms), I imagine that many  areas in the US (most?) have only obs, and lazy greedy ones at that.
