My job or his?? Who takes the risk?

Option 1:
Move 6 hours east where I will get more hours and pay, but so is not guaranteed a transfer with his job.

Option 2:
Move 6 hours west where he will get more hours and pay, but I am not guaranteed a transfer.

Love how we both got offered to transfer within days of each other. Different employers. I am federal he is   Not.

There are other factors to consider,  in my opinion.  Which is your family closer to? Who makes more money? Where is the cost of living better? If there was no transfer available,  whose skills are more marketable?

I was going to say that is hard, until you said your job is federal. Typically that means you have much better than his, cheaper benefits, & a better chance at increase in pay, and long term position.

But if you can survive on one person's salary alone and not the other alone that would sway me to go that way.

I'd check out job postings online for each of the cities and see where there are more opportunities for whoever doesn't have a guaranteed job.

I would wager your overall compensation is better than his (health insurance, vacation days, guaranteed work, etc). In that case, I'd lean towards moving for your job. If that is also the larger city, it seems he would have a better chance of getting a new job, even if it's the same type of job.
