Can you stay friends after breaking up?

So last week my boyfriend and I broke up. We were best friends before we started dating and he wants to remain friends now which I agreed to try. I'm just curious how many people have managed to make it work or if it gets too difficult further down the line? We're both still young and were each other's first serious relationship if that makes a difference

I think it’s best to not spend time together as friends at first, so you can both take the time and space you need to move on, being friends again can happen later

I've stayed friends with a handful of my exes, not at first though. I think with time it's possible but if too soon then it's easy to get a little too friendly.. if you know what I mean, and that just defeats the purpose of the breakup.

It depends on why you two broke up. I was with my first bf for 8yrs, and recently broke up with him; mainly bc i just grew out of him. Nothing bad ever happened. We’re still friends, we text once in awhile..but it’s getting to the point where we talk maybe once a month. So it is possible, it just may be a little awkward for a couple months. ❤️

You can sometimes but it can become difficult when either of you get into new relationships because your new partner might become jealous of your friendship since you used to be together.

Thanks everyone, I think we'll just keep contact to a minimum when we're with mutual friends and see how it goes from there because I definitely still have feelings for him

I’m still friends with my first love. We just weren’t right for each other and it took me a long time to get over him and get back to being just friends- maybe 3 years. I definitely still have a soft spot for him, he is a lovely person inside and out, but I no longer love him like I used to. Every relationship is different though so no one can really say if you should/ shouldn’t stay friends 🙃

My first boyfriend was my best friend before we started dating. We never should have tho. We got our feelings mixed up lol but I took it hard and couldn’t even be near him for months but then once i started dating my current boyfriend (of three years now) I realized the only way I could be confident with my new BF was if I made amends with my ex and now 2 1/2 Years later he is one of my best friends and he is dating a girl who is practically my sister and I couldnt be happier for them (especially since I helped them get together)
