Has anyone moved away from where they grew up?

Question

Moved internationally, or across the country, or just away from the life you're used to?
How did you make it happen? How did you meet new people? How long before you felt at home? 
I'm planning to move to the other side of the country and I don't really know where to start. I'm waiting for my brother to graduate cause we're doing this together, so at least I'll have him with me. He's done in December 2018 so we have time to prepare but I want to hear from people who have done it. Do you have any advice? Thanks

My husband did. He moved over 1,200 miles to be with me. Some days, it’s difficult because he misses seeing things he grew up with or special places to eat, but he has a better relationship with his family now. He only has work buddies, but that’s how he was originally. It was easier for him to feel at home because he moved to make a home with me. Best advice? Don’t be afraid to miss home, but don’t let it stop you. There is so much to experience in life. Try to do one new thing once a week or once a month. Try a new place to eat, go to a museum. Hit up social media for people with like interests. If you do the things you love, you’ll find people also doing those things.

I moved from NJ to Canada, for love. I didn't think it'd be a big deal, but being away from everything and everyone I knew sent me into a depression. I joined a gym, took group exercise classes, and got to know people. It also introduced me to yoga, which opened a door to a new life for me. Another thing I did was join a knitting/crochet group on Facebook. Look for established groups that cater to your interests, you'll find like-minded individuals that can become friends. Also, if you're moving to a place with public transit (bus), ride a few lines to get an understanding of the layout of where you live. Stay in touch with people back home, it will help.

I moved from Ohio to Georgia to be with my husband who is military! Honestly girl, just through work and social events you start to find your place. Look on facebook pages for events or other people who are looking for friends, that helps a lot! just be you and figure life out and friends and placement will come!

I have moved about 1100km from where I grew up. Hubby came when he got a job and I moved seven months later when the new school year started. A few visits in between. Finding a place to live was difficult because I needed to fly up, borrow a car, go to inspections, apply for rentals, and then get rejected anyway. I ended up offering more money per week at the last place I looked and we finally got it. We rented for a year while we built our house. 
Having jobs means an instant network but I don’t really have friends outside of work which can be hard but my brother and sil and mum are all within about an hour of here so I see them quite regularly.

I left for college 4 hours away from my family. Lived in the dorms and met people. Moved out of the dorms, got a job, met more people. Met my husband...wasn’t that difficult. Save up money now for deposits and to live off of until you get a job wherever you’re moving. Probably looking at a couple grand at least. Lookup cost of living wherever you’re going. Lineup your living situation at minimum 2 weeks before going. I’d also start putting in job apps around then too and if you get called explain you’re moving to the area and see if they’re willing to schedule an interview when you arrive.

I moved with my husband away from all of our friends and family (across the country). We ended up moving back home years later, but then he enlisted in the military so we’re once again away from family and friends 15+ hours away. 
I met people at work and my husband’s job. We also met people in our neighborhood. I love being away from my family, as there’s always a lot of drama. I miss them, but seeing them once or twice a year keeps me sane. :)

I haven’t done it, but my sister lives in Wales and I’m in Australia. She originally moved from Perth to Melbourne. She loved it there, and she went to uni and had a job, so she made friends.
She’s been in Wales since early December, and she’s lonely at the moment since she can’t work or study. She’s also living in the country. Her partner takes her to see his friends though, and takes her sightseeing. She can’t drive, so his mum will take her into town once or twice a week.
