Preemie Boy/Girl Twins are 6 weeks old!

At 35 weeks even I was told I had preeclampsia. It was suddenly onset and both of my babies and myself were in danger.

It wasn’t a surprise because throughout my pregnancy my doctor told me that it wasn’t a matter of ‘if’ I got preeclampsia, it was ‘when’. This was because I had preeclampsia in my previous Singleton pregnancy.

Despite being prepared for it, you are never truly ready. I just kept thinking how much needed to be done to prepare for their arrival.

I ignored the symptoms for days. The headaches, the sudden swelling, the extreme heartburn, the fact I couldn’t breathe, the unwell feeling that plagued me, and the loss of appetite with nausea worse than the first trimester.

All of it was ignored. I just figured that being 35 weeks meant bad side effects but I knew better.

When I finally went to my scheduled appointment, my doctor was alarmed and scheduled blood work. I was called back the next day and asked to come back in on the next day.

When I went back, my babies had already started to decline. We were admitted to the hospital December 29th. We received continued-monitoring, countless blood work, IVS that kept blowing, painful steroid shots, a catheter, and a magnesium drip to keep me from seizing.

Sunday December 31st, our two blessings were born via c section. They stopped growing because of the preeclampsia. Despite being early, they had no issues besides a hint of jaundice. They were breathing and eating like champs.

What I need to ask of all of you twin/multiple moms is never ignore the signs of preeclampsia. Read and do research and take notes. Write it on your walls, phones, and mirrors and breathe it in daily. Know that it’s extremely more likely with multiples.

Also, despite whatever anyone tells you, steroid shots do help even if you didn’t have them months or weeks before. I was told this by even nurses but I can’t imagine what would’ve happened to my babies without them.

Listen to your doctor and listen to your body. The main goal is to get them here safely.
