Are inductions as bad as people say?

We're planning a membrane sweep at 40+6 and if baby still isn't budging, we're going for an induction at 41+2. Are inductions with pitocin as bad as they're made out to be?

Not for me.

I was induced with my first and from the time contractions started til the time I was holding my baby it had been just a bit over 2.5 hours. The pain was intense but I made it with no meds.

My water broke with my second and after 16 hours with no contractions they started pitocin. About 3 hours later I was holding my baby. Again, no pain meds

From all the research and info that is out there about drugs like pitocin, I would say yes. There should be a medical reason for the induction (according to the research) but you will already be technically over due. A quick google search pulled up lots of articles. But there are lots of studies And info in books too.

I don't have anything to compare yet, but I had an induction with my first. The pain was bad, but I managed without an epidural. The contractions were very constant though, they almost never stopped. From what I hear about non induced labor is that you get more of a break between contractions. Hopefully I will experience my next without induction. Seeing a midwife this time so it is more promising.

My induction with my first was wonderful! I was in labor for 5 hours and I'm excited to give birth again because my first experience was so great.

I got an emergency induction at 39+1. I went from 2cm to fully dilated  in under 3 hours and was holding my baby 5 hours after the whole thing started. It hurt like hell and the pain ramped up really quickly. I had been planning to get an epidural anyway and am really glad I asked for it because in the hour I had to wait for the anesthesiologist I thought I would die from the pain. That said, once the epidural was in, my labor progressed beautifully (less than 30 min of pushing) and I was calm and relaxed the whole time and got to enjoy my little one by early afternoon. Yes, pitocin can cause complications...but so can natural labor! I'd say don't worry about it, just listen to your doctor and it'll all be over before you know it!

I haven't had an induction but from what my doctor discussed with me: he said that inducing can be more painful and cause labor to last longer. It's possible because you're forcing baby out and baby may not be positioned just right and your body has to work harder to get it out than if you went into labor naturally. I really don't want to be induced but I've got less than three weeks left of this pregnancy and I can't guarantee that if I go past due and the doctor offers j won't say yes lol

I haven't given birth yet , but when I asked about the pain of induction versus the pain of natural labor I was told that the amount of pain is the same. However, the progression is so much faster than natural labor your body doesn't release the hormones that it does with natural labor which makes it feel like it hurts worse. Maybe knowing this will make us both a little more confident going in.

With my daughter and son I was inducted. The first time my pain went from a 2 to a 10 within 3 contractions. If it had been gradual I probably would have gone epidural free. My second induction we had the epidural administered shortly after the pictocin. Since I was laying on my side most of the time I labored only 1/2 of my body was numb. I'm now 33 wks with our 3rd, on bedrest looking at another induction within 3 weeks. I know what to expect and will definitely have the epidural again. Best of luck.

All 3 of mine went well. But I do hear bad stories from a lot of other women.  :-/
