What's the difference between and epidural and a spinal tap? Do you get both or just one?

Epidural is for laboring patients. Spinal anesthesia is for c section.  The dose of anesthesia is more for a spinal.  So you can have an epidural and if you end up with a c section they use the same thing to give you the medicine for your c section. No, you don't get to pick

I have a scheduled as they are removing a large cyst at the same time.  My doc said they may give a combo Spinal epidural based on how long the procedure takes.

A spinal tap is also a one shot deal. With an epidural they leave a tiny little tube in so that you can give yourself another dose when it starts wearing off. With a spinal they don't leave any tube so once it wears off you're done or you have to have to repeat the procedure. You would have to talk to your dr about wether or not you have a choice though. Some Drs might give you a choice but I think most don't.

I get to pick this time but only because it's my third scheduled c section. I chose an epidural. The spinal tap made me super sick, and the epidural worked great for me, so we are going with that one this time
