I used to work at Wells Fargo & Bank of America. The team builders were always "optional" but really it was heavily frowned upon if you didn't attend. 
Not sure what your current job is like but you have to read between the lines so to speak. Obviously they can't fire you directly for not going to optional activities outside the workplace, but as we all know people play favorites & think your not engaged at your workplace when you don't participate. 
I absolutely HATED having to see all my coworkers when I just spent 45-50 hours with them all week. Like give me my days off & space!

If you don’t go you would look like you’re not a team player. Depending on your role this could look bad for you from upper management.
