My OH works with his old squadron captain from when he was in the SAS and they are still very good friends now, he really is exactly like that in person and he really is a survival specialist. They like to rib him and wind him up about bits of his shows but overall it is completely genuine and while I haven't met him OH has and said he's a really nice guy and the show is very real.
