Toxic masculinity and why gender roles can be harmful

I see a lot of people on here asking, “what’s wrong with gender roles?”

Of course, the short answer is nothing. But if you look at the bigger picture, gender roles contribute to gender essentialism, which contributes to toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity contributed to violence, such as mass shootings. The idea that men and women/boys and girls are completely separate beings that should have different life experiences and expectations is harmful. It creates a culture in which the only way men can express themselves is through anger and violence.
