Laughing gas for labor?

My midwife was talking about using nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for contractions during labor.. Anyone have experience with this/what are y'all's thoughts on it?

Gas and air is generally the first and the main pain relief given in the UK.

It is seen as a good way of preventing the need for more serious pain relief such as pethidine or epidural.

As with ANY pain medication given during labour, it CAN pass on to the baby BUT it is seen as the least risky pain medications to pass on to baby with the least side effects after birth.

Personally I would go for gas and air before I even considered other medicated pain relief methods.

I have heard of this! There is a midwife delivery house near me that does this as an alternative to other drugs! I do not know benefits / risks! Maybe research home births or clinical midwifed it may give you some information! Good luck!

Our birthing class trainer is a nurse and had never heard of it (we're in the U.S.).

I was told I couldn't have it (this was pertaining to a dental procedure) because it would pass to the baby.
