pregnancy? Black mold exposure or illegal drugs?" /> We discovered our neighbors had a slow water leak that seeped into our wall. I don't know how long it's been going but yesterday i discovered my closet full of black mold. I don't know how long It's been there but probably since I've been pregnant. 10 weeks today.

Of course I'm freaking out. But I'm trying to make myself feel better by saying ppl have been exposed to worse and sometimes their babies turn out alright.

Does any in home improvement/mold restoration have any idea of the health affects of indirect mold exposure? We don't use this closet much but the door has always been slightly open bc my cat likes to hide in this closet.

If the neighbors caused this by a leak they need to fix it!! I think both drugs and mold are bad. Neither is good for you at all. Call your landlord ASAP!!

I have googled black mold because the house we moved into had some (hubby spent a lot of time scrubbing and we got a heavy duty air purifier). The worst I can find is there is a small percentage of black mold that cause toxic fumes (about 10%). The rest can just cause allergies. The largest amount of spores enter the air when cleaning so that is the time to be out of your place and have your SO use mask, gloves and if possible an air purifier. Or let maintenance take care of it. True damage can be caused to infants around mold (some rare disease that I can't remember the name of). So it is definitely something to have removed but doesn't have to be until closer to the end of your pregnancy. I haven't heard of any other proven consequences for black mold-just a lot of theories. Do your own research because it put my mind more at ease. I was freaking out like you when i realized our house had it and I  10w as well!  Knowledge is power. Oh and to prevent any future mold, we have used damp rid or if the moisture still persists (we live in a 1960's house in the humid south), we will get a dehumidifier. Don't freak out until you have knowledge. None of the credible sites I have read have ever listed tumors or cancer-not any more so than eating processed food or using cleaning chemicals in your house can cause.

Black mold is toxic! Our shower leaked through the wall into our son's bedroom wall and looked the exact same as that. I wasn't pregnant at the time, thank God, but the black mold did have some effects on us. We had to move our son out of that room until the landlord fixed the shower and wall. My husband and I had both been extremely sick for several weeks with very bad sinus infections/major sinus troubles and no medicines would help us get better- Then we discovered the mold behind my sons dresser. We sprayed bleach directly onto the wall and let it sit to kill the mold, wiped it, and respected bleach again, and we sealed off the room and left the door closed for over a week until the landlord would come and fix it. Whenever we had to go in the room for something for my son, we covered our noses and mouthes with a thick hand towel to avoid breathing in any excess. I would highly recommend that you stay away from that closet, or wear a medical mask or cover your nose and mouth with a thick towel if you HAVE to go in there. Spray it with bleach, and if you rent (which I assume since your neighbor is close enough to have a water leak affect your wall), call someone to fix it IMMEDIATELY. Black mold IS toxic, and very harmful to a pregnant woman and unborn baby. You have a fighting chance at a lawsuit if they are not willing to fix it right away.
