How do hiccups work?

I've wondered this for a while. When I hiccup, I do a jerky inhalation. My baby doesn't not seen to do that. She seems more like she exhaling.. Confused..

Hiccups are (believe it or not) muscle spasms in your diaphragm. It is an involuntary muscular reaction which is why there is no real true "cure" for hiccups. Your diaphragm is much stronger and more developed than your babies so their spasms won't feel as violent as yours seem to be. Best thing to do is to calm your body and take long deep breaths while trying to relax. It may help to relax your diaphragmatic muscles. :)
