Smoking and breastfeeding?

Question

Is smoking while breastfeeding a yes or no? I'm aware smoking during pregnancy is a huge no no and I've already quit not long after I found out about this baby. I couldn't quit cold turkey so I had to ween myself off of them. I know starting back afterwards would be stupid, but everyone I'm around smokes so I'm just curious, if after the baby is here and I do start back would it effect her breastfeeding? I plan on exclusively breastfeeding for a year.

I would imagine the nicotine and random other chemicals get into the milk. You did this long, don't start up again! I quit about 6 months before we started trying with our first, it's been 5 years now, you can do it!

I've read, can't remember where now, that breast milk of a smoking mother is still better and more beneficial than formula. Maybe try to google that and see if there's a related credible article. I really wish I remember where I found that.

Pretty sure it would get into breast milk? I would definitely speak to a doctor about possible complications.
I think you would need to be concerned about smoke on clothes etc too. My friend who smoked while breastfeeding used to not smoke for an hour before he was due for a feed and she would also have a jumper that she left outside and put it on to have a smoke and then take it off before coming back inside.
She would also wash her face / hands before picking the baby up.
Would be best to try and not smoke at all but that's sometimes easier said than done (coming from a former smoker)

I think the risk of smoking while breastfeeding is reducing the milk supply. I would double check though!

Anything you consume secretes less than 1% into your breastmilk. So smoking wouldn't effect your baby directly with a low moderation. But it could decrease your milk supply so if you're trying to healthily breastfeed for a consecutive year I would advise against smoking, plus if you've quit for this long, you might as well keep it up for your overall health as a mother!
