Demerol? Sorry this is long

Question

Five years ago I had my son, and my labor experience was less than ideal. I was induced, ended up in labor for 19 hours, 3 hours of which were on and off pushing.

I had an epidural, which I found to be mind-blowingly painful. My mom has an issue with her spine that didn't allow her to have epis, and I'm wondering if I have the same problem since so many women find epis to be tolerable. It also didn't take on my left side at all.

I'm only 10 weeks, but I'm already concerned about labor. I hear Demerol is an option, but I haven't heard much about it. I will, of course, talk to my doctor at my next visit in two weeks, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience here. Does it help? Any other things that got you through labor beyond the epidural?

I was given Demerol during labor with my first and it made me feel very drowsy and kinda loopy. I kept feeling my eyes rolling back into my head. But it did take the edge off the pain.

I couldn't get the epidural bc the anesthesiologist was in an emergency c section. It was incredibly painful, but still not as bad as I'd imagined. I spent most of my labor on my hands and knees in the hospital shower w hot water aimed at the small of my back where my contractions were. Def took the edge off!!

I have had both. I'm worried about the same because my spine is so sensitive. I didn't like the Demerol because I felt loopy and it wore off pushing (and that one was my shortest labor too)

Demerol is not recommended in labor anymore, but there are plenty of other options for pain relief (Nubian, stafol, fentanyl). Talk to your OB or midwife when you get closer to delivery and have a plan in place for pain management.
