I think they are. Which is why I will never be a step parent. If you think they are, you shouldn’t be a step parent either.

You can love someone and think they’re a burden simultaneously. I love my bf’s son, but I also resent him and especially his mom (she makes terrible decisions nonstop) too. Relationships and people are complicated.

Sometimes. Love em both but his daughter(M) has gotten the hormone fairy so that’s fun. Plus, she’s allowed to basically run her mother’s(A) house, has behavior I’d call mostly inappropriate and small child like instead of her almost 15 years, plus, (M) has no respect or thought of anyone else, ever, not even when it’s pointed out that it’s someone else’s birthday, it’s still ALL about her and what she wants or doesn’t want. We blame her mother for basically not preparing (M) for real life and the disappointments that entails, we think it’s on purpose so (M) will never leave her mama(A). If it were up to us she(M) would’ve been sent to military school or something like outward bound that kids like her were sent to when I was growing up to straighten out. As soon as her head got pulled outta you know where, we’d happily welcome her home but that’s not gonna happen so my guy’s stuck spending time with her at his exes since she(A) won’t “make” her come to our house with her brother every other week like agreed upon. 
I didn’t get along with any of the 3, yes 3, step mothers I had growing up so I was very hopeful that we would be friends, I’d be like the aunt or older sister, I’m NOT tryin to be 2nd mom, but her mom’s need to be liked and to let (M) do, kinda whatever she wants has made that impossible. I WILL NOT be disrespected, constantly, in my own home so hopefully some day, she’ll grow up and we can have a relationship then, but for now, I’ll stick with hangin with my boys(my man & his son).

My step mom gained three new daughters when she married my dad. She has never once felt that we were burdens to her. She doesn’t get along with one of my sisters (this sister is a bit psychotic lol no one gets along with her) but she still lovingly puts her on her health insurance and gives her access to her gym membership and anything else she needs. She’s also a fantastic grandmother to my daughter and is easily one of my best friends. I feel that if you don’t like your significant others kids then you probably shouldn’t be marrying them. I could never welcome someone into my daughters life if they felt she was a burden on them (although I’m happily married to her dad so I’d hope that day wouldn’t come in the first place). The kids absolutely need to be taken into consideration when you choose to marry someone with children.

my step daughter is amazing. she is my best friend. ive been in her life since she was 6 months old so she treats me as a parent and i treat her as my child but we have so much fun together and love hanging out with each other. she is attached to me all the time when she is with us. i never would see her as a burden she is one of the best things to have ever happened in my life.
