Are we crazy for wanting to get a puppy?

Question

We have our second baby due in July (our first is almost 3), and we are considering getting a puppy. Our landlord has approved it, and my husband is 100% on board. I grew up with dogs, and they have always been huge support animals for me, and my dog passed away almost two years ago. I feel like I'm ready to have a new buddy, but Im worried we are freaking bonkers for wanting to get a puppy just a few months before welcoming another baby.

If I was in your situation I would get one that’s already potty trained because potty training a puppy requires a ton of supervision that you’ll need for your new baby!

So we have nine dogs ranging from 10 years ago the way down to 10 months. I breed, show and hunt my dogs and have been involved with them for 25 years. Training is always ongoing, regardless of the age of the dog. So, as experienced as I am I would never consider adding a dog at any point in the next year or so (I'm also due in July) even if we didn't have so many dogs and have suspended my breeding program this year as well. To raise a well adjusted dog you really need to be able to put consistent time and energy into them,  they are only as good as what you put into them. Sadly the majority of owner surrendered dogs are the result of lack of training, and really you need to devote at least two years to it, as it's so much more than house training! Babies are also very time consuming! I would personally wait until your child is at least two. And that goes for any dog, not just a puppy as an older rescue needs time you adjust in a new home as well and you want to be extra careful bringing a rescue in your home when you have a small child.

I love my dog but he 100% makes my house more dirty than my toddler does and it’s hard enough to keep up as it is. My husband and I are both on the same page that we should not have added the dog to our family 3 months before we had our baby. Oh well, he’s ours now and we take care of him but thought I’d share my two cents 😬 We love him but in the end he adds more work for us, it’s just the truth, AND we are dog people

I honestly think you should wait. A puppy needs a lot of attention and once your baby is born you’re taking away the attention the puppy needs to be trained. If you really want a dog you should consider an older (6+ months) dog from a shelter that is possibly trained and friendly.

My parents got me a puppy when I was 8 days old. They had a dog already and my older sister. However my grandmother bred Chows and had a liter weened right as I was 8 days old. She really wanted me to have the pup and I grew up with her my whole life until age 11. I have 2 dogs and am expecting my daughter in July. No I dont think youre crazy. I mean if I difnt already have 2 Id want one to raise with my baby girl.

Peronally I wouldn't because you don't know they're personality yet, especially with a puppy. They could be a great puppy and become aggressive as they get older. Also alot of puppy are incredibly active, and a puppy running around and barking everywhere while trying to get an infant asleep sounds like hell.
