Thoughts on names/nicknames?

Question

My husband feels that if we have an idea for a nickname /shorter version of a full name for our baby, we should just name it the nickname. 
For example, if we plan to call the baby “Will” then we should name the baby Will - not William. 
I don’t think I really have an opinion on this - what do you guys think?

I personally have the exact opposite of that opinion. Lol me and my husband only have named our kids names that have a lot of nickname options so we name them the whole real name. My husband is actually named Steve. Not Steven. And it really bothers him. Everyone assumes his actual name is Steven. So all of his legal papers and even clients call him Steven, and he hates having to correct people constantly. We specifically gave our oldest son the middle name Steven, after his father, but his correct name. Lol it’s a personal preference though. I know plenty of people who name kids short nickname, names. I just love the options. I like to know that when my sons are older they can choose to be called whatever name fits them at that time. I don’t like the idea of someone being named only Jonny, and then from now on they always kind of sound like a kid. But it’s what you like at the end of the day.

It’s funny because both my husband and I go by shorter versions of our full name. When I told idea this to my friend she recounted that she was named Cassondra even though her parents planned to call her Cassie because her mom was “just Cathy” similar to how your husband is “just Steve.”
Sounds like it is a pendulum that may swing back and forth each generation.

I love my name. It gave me the freedom to be called what I wanted.

I LOVE nicknames.  That being said, for me personally they are nicknames.  I don’t feel like they are actual names.  For the most part I don’t find it odd when other people do it (I met a Jeff who wasn’t a Jeffrey which I thought was a little odd, but Eliza insisted of Elizabeth doesn’t phase me at all).  Just a personal preference.
Our pick for a girl has 4 nickname options, allowing us to pick which suits her best as she gets older (if we have a girl, we don’t know).  
I love names like Christopher and Catherine exactly for their multiple nickname potential.  I would be so said if we went with Chis and Cathy only to find our kids were more Topher and Kit for example.  
That being said, it works well for a lot of people so I’m sure my taste will be in the minority.

I think using a full name is important for many reasons but especially when you are a male. I adore the name Frankie and considered it for our last son. My husband liked it also but I insisted his name be Frank. I wanted him to be able to introduce himself with a proper name. A name that was suitable for a boy and a man. We decided against Frank/Frankie because we couldn’t agree.

This was my thinking too. We wanted to call our baby Charlie. A nickname of the name Charles (his grandfathers name) but I’ve went by my middle name my whole life and I know how annoying it is to always have to correct the doctor or the teacher etc. So instead of naming him Charles Michael we are naming him Charlie Michael. Since we are going to call him that anyways 🤷🏻‍♀️

We named our first daughter Madeline planning on just calling her Maddie. I have called her Maddie maybe 2 times and she's now almost 2. I'm glad we did a full name and didn't just name her Maddie, I would have ended up hating it. My in laws call her nothing but Maddie and it actually drives me crazy. I don't know what switched but it switched for both my husband and I. I'm all for her choosing which she prefers when she can vocalize it and choose if she wants the nickname but until then it's her full name for me.

we name them what we are going to call them. my daughter is Evelyn and yes, we call her that. my name isn't short for anything.
