maybe stupid question, but how do you know?

(first time mom) I'm breastfeeding and my goal is to take it to a minimum of 2 years. Sometimes I see comments about babies that wean themselves before they're 1 year old. But how does the weaning happen? like gradually or just refusing to nurse on a particular day? How do you know it is weaning and not a nursing strike or that there is something else wrong that causes a dislike to nurse. I can imagine that it may be different after a year old when they are also getting more solids, but what about the first year when milk is still the main source of nutrition?

Most people don’t know and that’s why they stop nursing early. According to WHO it’s unusual for a baby to self wean before two years old (most 4 years old) so you just keep nursing. Your nursing schedule will change as time goes on, eventually real food will replace nursing for the most part. But even then 3-6 times a day is normal even when they’re eating all meals and snacks. Every kid is different so we can’t tell you what to look for, you just have to get into your own schedule with your kid. Two years is a big goal, good luck!

I breastfed my daughter till she was two 🙌🏻 yes she would eat solid food as well but will give it to get when she wanted milk so if that’s what you want then do ♥️

Most babies will not wean themselves because it's natural to feed longer and for other reasons (like comfort). The US is one of the only places that thinks its "normal" or  the goal to feed a baby at the breast till 1 year. Which of course is fine bit not exactly natural. Let baby feed for as long as it wants and before you know it you will be passed year 1! Don't stress yourself out thinking about that stuff.  Take it a day at a time and he or she will wean when they're ready and start solids when they're ready (research baby led weaning). I nursed #2 till 2. 6 months and had to stop due to preterm labor with #3. Started nursing again with #3 and #2 joined in (for comfort at bed time)! Never in a million years did I think that would happen but it did and we are all happy 💙  Best wishes!!!

My daughter is going to be 1 year soon and there have been so many ups and downs. It would seem like sometimes she didn't want to nurse and then she would, so my best advice would be to establish the routine and then keep offering the breast even through the tough times!

after a year their main source of nutrition is food, you're supposed to have them start trying baby food around 6 months so they are ready for food at a year
