Just curious, because it seems like most people I know have been in one at some point.

The mental/emotional ones are usually the hardest ones to spot at first. Physical is obvious but the other two, you’ve got to be willing to recognize that the person you love IS in face abusing you in that form. There’s usually at least ONE person in our pasts that has mentally/emotionally abused us. Recognizing the signs is the hard part.

I’ve been in an emotionally abusive relationship. And I was in a borderline physically abusive relationship, but I left the second he started hitting things (never escalated to hitting me)

I was, but I wasn’t the one abused. I was very emotionally and mentally manipulative towards my husband at one point. I was struggling with a lot of mental heath problems and (wrongfully) took it out on him, the one who was helping me. I wanted attention and he gave it to me, but no amount of attention was good enough. I didn’t want to do what I did and I’m thankful for him sticking by me and recognizing where it was coming from.
