I think it depends on the place. I have pretty bad credit and have an apartment.

It likely depends.  We ran a credit report on our renter and used it to make a decision.  You don’t need a credit card so much as a good credit history, and likely depends on whether it is managed by a company or individual owners like us, and if it is in a highly competitive desirable area where you are competing against other renters, or if it is a less desirable area where no one has good credit. In a highly desirable area, you will likely need a co-signer if you don’t have a strong credit report and a strong salary.  Other areas don’t need that.

I know there are apartments that ask for credit checks, but out of the 3 I rented from when I was younger, none of them ever did. Just proof I had a job.

some places you need it or you end up with high deposits, some places don't rent to first time renters either

It really depends, my first few apartments were through private landlords so I had a landlord history but had shit credit so I still got approved for places because I had rental history
