Are handmade baby gifts tacky?

Reason I ask is because I have lots of friends expecting babies, and I love to knit hats, or cross stitch something cute for the nursery, or sew a receiving blanket for them. I have always loved making and receiving handmade gifts, but I got a Facebook invite to a baby shower for an acquaintance, and the person throwing it specifically said to please not bring handmade gifts as the mom to be thinks they're tacky.

So, people of CC, what do you think? Are handmade gifts tacky?
