How did everyone know when they were in labor?

I'm sorry if it seems like a dumb question but I was curious because I've thought I was in labor and then turned out not to be despite painful contractions at like 4 minutes apart for hours. So how did you know when you were in labor? We're there signs before hand or did it just happen unexpectedly?

Tbh I didn’t I was having cramps that were at a level 2 on the pain scale every 2-3 minutes apart I called my dr she said go in and get monitored and when I went in to get monitored they told me I wasn’t going home got me into a room and 3 minutes later my water broke and I was all I heard a pop I think my water broke, they ordered an epi but I was 9cm 5 minutes after my water broke, then I was involuntarily pushing and I was like oh no he’s coming right now, and 45 minutes later bc I kept getting distracted my now 1yo was born😂

My water broke a whole two minutes before I realized, didn’t get any contractions had to be induced

I knew when the hospital told me. I was in labor for almost 24hrs and dilated to a 5 when I got there. id lost my muscas plug the night before and didn't realize it. no one knows for sure till you are. if you think you are, just go in, better safe than sorry.
