Some people said they are very helpful, especially for FTM. What is your opinion?

i'm a trained doula and am lucky enough to know a couple in the area so the one i am planning on hiring is giving me an amazing rate :) i'm having a homebirth so i need a solid support team!

I've been given mixed feedback about hiring one. My husband and I talked about it, and we both weren't too comfortable with spending $1000+ on the service (I'm in the SanFrancisco  Area) especially since our hospital L+D is mainly run by midwives. Plus I think my husband is going to be a great coach and is really engaged in learning how to help me through labor. It's really a personal choice. If you've got the cash and your partner isn't showing signs of being a promising coach, then I would say go for it!

Our hospital has a doula program, including a doula-in-training program for people who can't afford the $800 for the certified doula. We're going with the doula-in-training as we don't have a lot of extra money these days and we can help someone meet their births to become certified. The cost drops down to $200 (much more manageable!) and most of the money goes back into the program for other future doulas.

My husband will be an awesome coach, but I know he'll need a break here and there, and I just want that advocate for us while we're both a little distracted. As a FTM, I also just feel comfortable having someone who has done it before, in our hospital, with our doctors (my OB has a team of docs and its whoever is on call that day.)

I am a Certified Doula. Yes it is very helpful to hire a Doula because our job is to provide support and care for mom and baby as long as needed. I have assisted 4 of my good friends both during pregnancy and postpartum. Lucky for them they were able to experience the excellent services of a Doula at no charge,but out of love..Currently I have 6 daughters and the skills of a Doula is something I plan to pass on to them.

Long story short, my midwife can't deliver my baby under insurance in Wa. State cuz it's a vbac, so I'm hiring her as a doula.

I considered it until I discussed with my OB. The hospital I'm using has a 1:1 patient to L&D nurse ratio, so we are not going to use a doula. If I was somewhere and had to share my nurse, I would be more likely to hire one.
