Nurse practitioner VS obgyn doctor? (Infertility concerns)

Question

I have my doctor appontment tomorrow at the obgyn to discuss why I can't conceive after six months of being off birth control.. I just found out today it was with the NP. What do you ladies think.. Is an NP worse than a doctor? Who will they send me to for running tests/discussing infertility?

I love the NP I see. If she's ever unsure about something or questioning a situation, she asks the doctors at the practice. She's very helpful and knowledgeable and I can quickly get an appointment or talk to her on the phone.

To be completely honest my NP has been WAYY more helpful than my other doctor. When I explained everything to her that was going on she just said okay, let's run every test so we can fix you all up. Now I am diagnosed with PCOS and then she sent me to a endocrinologist for my diabetes and thyroid. She was the first person to ever do thy even though all my other doctors have always been worries about it.

NPs have a different care philosophy than with a doctor. When you go to your appointment, you should ask them to articulate for you how they're different than a doctor and what can you expect from their care. If you're comfortable, stick with them, or ask to see the dr. if you feel it's better fit for you. As a care model, lots of practices have NPs on staff and they communicate with the practice's doctors. One is not necessarily better than the other -My husband is an NP.

I think you will be just as happy with a NP as you would a doc. they too know their stuff and will send u to a doc if needed. with a NP you can be seen quickly and often

I met with a nurse practitioner after 14 months of trying. She was very nice and explained everything about the tests that she recommended and was really positive. I met with her 4 days before my period was due( 2 days after a bfn) and she told me that she would be able to do blood tests, semen analysis and hsg that cycle. And if I wanted to we could try a medicated iui that cycle as well. I was very happy with her attitude and was excited to start working with her. I was surprised when I missed my period and then found out I was pregnant. So I did not need her services but I think she was very good and if I need help in the future I will go back to a nurse practitioner.

I am a nurse practitioner. If this is the first conversation you're having about infertility, an NP is a good place to start. She'll know what tests to order for an initial evaluation, and you will get in sooner than seeing the doctor. It may be something simple or you may need to be referred to a RE, which the NP can do for you. In addition to being an NP myself, I have only seen an NP for my Gyn care since I was a teenager. I had issues with infertility (which wound up being related to my ex, luckily), but she ordered all my preliminary tests and then got me set up with the RE. She'll be able to answer all your questions, and if not, her Doc will be just down the hall to help out.
