Breastfeeding help?

Question

This might be a slightly stupid question , but is there any way to help increase your odds of being able to breastfeed? I'm a FTM and hear about people who wanted to but just couldn't .. Is there anything that can be done before you deliver to help with breastfeeding? It's all so confusing to me!

It's only about 2% of women that are physically incapable of producing enough milk for their babies. So the odds are in your favor.

Just read up and become well educated on the process and speak with a lactation consultant.

All good advice! It's great to educate yourself ahead of time, and take advantage of all the assistance you can get. If your hospital has lactation consultants, use them. If you can find a support group or la leche league meeting near you, don't hesitate to participate. Having support and real evidence-based answers to questions can make all the difference. I highly recommend just trying to learn your babies cues, and don't worry about how much or how often baby is eating. Every pair is different! Also, it can be challenging at times, but the best advice I got was not to quit on a bad day.

Take a class before you deliver so you have a head's up about what to expect. Also understand that while breastfeeding is "natural" that doesn't always mean that it's easy and instinctual (though it can be for some). It is a skill that mom and baby both have to learn. Get help from the lactation consultant after you deliver and don't be afraid to reach out for help after you go home. Your Dr and baby's pediatrician can both refer you for additional lactation help. Lots of hospitals have breastfeeding groups, too. It takes work at first, but it is completely worth it in my opinion. Good luck!

I would say an important thing is have a good support system. With my first, I did not feel prepared at all I asked for help at the hospital but they didn't really do a good job of assuring me. So I ended up pumping for 6 weeks and then because of my work schedule I had to switch to formula. With my second, something just clicked. I also had a friend that was also breast feeding and was able to talk to her about anything that I was worried about. It's not easy. It's important to remember that baby is learning as well as you so it will take time before it is comfortable and it does get easier. I nursed my second boy until he was almost 2 1/2. It's a huge commitment but so worth it!! Don't give up and don't be afraid to ask for help.

All I can think to tell a ftm about breastfeeding is to read everything and educate yourself on it as much as you can and add things like nursing pads and nipple cream to your registries so your prepared when u need them. Don't be afraid to ask for help when the baby gets here and you're having problems. Every new mom has struggles but keep trying and you will more than likely be successful

Sometimes you just need to stick with it. Some give up too easily, some have other issues that are unavoidable but if you get some help from a lactation consultant in hospital, they'll get you started then there are always groups for support. Good luck!
