Outrageous salon prices?

Anyone else have a problem with the price of styling hair? Maybe I'm just new to attempting to do anything with my hair, but I just wanted to dye mine flat black and they wanted $170 for that. Not cutting, cut the color. I feel like it's like textbook prices. I went to a barber and they wanted $50 (my hair is long). Anyone else think this is rediculious?? What would you pay for you hair? Or 2ft hair like mine? Just to dye it.

Many hair stylists go through schooling, pay for current up to date training, pay rent on their chairs, buy product and styling tools, pay for their licenses etc. you also have to factor in the cost of the dye/bleach, their time, length of your hair, and any treatments they need to do to ensure minimal damage due to chemicals being put into your hair. You kind of get what you pay for when it comes to hair. I can only afford to get mine done once every six months but when I do go, I make sure I go somewhere nice and tip. $170 does seem a bit high. I pay $120 for a partial foil, cut, dry, and style plus a $20 tip but it doesn't shock me.

As a stylist, I won't apologize for the prices. If you have thick, 2ft long hair, we have to charge you for extra dye (and processing solution), and for the additional time it takes. It's likely that you also get a free blow dry with that, which is VERY time consuming with hair like that. Also, keep in mind that your stylist may make 40% commission. She has to survive too, you know.

So,  because your dying it all black and I'm assuming this is darker than your natural color, go to your local beauty supply store (around here we have sallys). Go for a demi permanent dye,  it washes out in about 6 weeks, and is more gentle on your hair since you only use a 10 developer.... No need to go higher because you're not lifting your natural color.  Even if you go permanent, you'll have to re dye every 6 weeks or so anyway depending on how fast your hair grows.

I dye my own hair I go with a dark brown/violet/red and my hair is naturally mouse poop brown. I have no issues with coverage or missing pieces. I always scrub my scalp well the day after I dye it (the dye will stain your scalp for about 1 wash).

You'll need to purchase gloves ($3.00 tops) a reusable bottle ($2.00) the color and the developer. I use ion demi and it's $7.00 for 1 box of dye and the amount of developer you need for each box. It makes 6oz so you'll probably need 2-3x that amount.

Do not use drugstore box dye on your hair. It's terrible. It damages horribly, doesn't last, and covers inconsistently.

It's only crazy to me (I think) because my mom is a beautician and I've never been to a salon to have my hair done. Now that I'm an adult I pay for my dyes. Never my haircuts. And I pay for my hair that she puts in extensions for me. I'm spoiled.

I pay 55.00 to have mine highlighted/lowlighted cut and styled and eyebrows done. And I have very dark brown hair and we take it really light.  I wouldn't ever consider near that amount! Here's a pic the day after I got it done last time.

It really depends on the area you are in. That sounds about right for my area, but inheard of in others, and a steal of a deal in another place.

While that seems a little high for my area, it is absolutely true you get what you pay for. With tip I pay a little over $100 for a cut and partial highlight every three months, it's worth it. 
I also know pricing fluctuates depending on your location, small town/big city.

$170 is VERY high for just a flat dye. At my salon, I usually pay around $100 for cut, dye, and blowout. If I wanted just dye, it's around $60-70. But you can definitely do it yourself by going to a beauty supply store and getting the materials you need there. It'll cost you $10-15 and it's very easy to do, but if your hair is long, you have to be careful about making sure you get EVERYTHING and don't miss any strands.
