Since the ewcm should last a few days, it's kinda both. The first day you get it means you are about to ovulate and then you ovulate while you should still have ewcm. It helps the sperm reach the egg better. I literally BDed on a day I had ewcm and am currently 33 weeks pregnant.

Cervical mucus isn’t reliable. I have egg white cervical mucus most of my cycle even if I’m not ovulating or close to ovulating. The only way to know for sure when you ovulate is using ovulation tests
