Ovulation/period

So I’ve seen on here that women sometimes don’t ovulate certain months when they’re keeping track with the sticks. If ovulation doesn’t happen and of course the woman doesn’t get pregnant, will there still be a period? Periods are literally throwing away unused eggs, so what’s the use of a period if I didn’t ovulate? Sorry, confused first time TTC woman here.
