What is the best fake tan method to use?

This isn’t really makeup related, but it’s close enough! I’m going to the beach this summer and I’m really pale, so I want to figure out what the best fake tan method is. I’m not insecure about being so light, but I would like to have some color to me before I go. I’ve used self tanning lotion before, but the one I used didn’t give me great results. I’ve also gotten a machine spray tan before, but it also wasn’t the best. Does anyone have suggestions? I’ve contemplated getting an airbrush tan as well. Any thoughts?
