Could you forgive?

Okay so my in laws made my fiancé’s family hate me, they told the family I was sleeping with my fiancé’s uncle for drugs (my mil had an affair with said uncle).. they told everyone I was fresh out of the mental hospital ( have never been , hope to never go but if I have to put up with them might need to pay a visit) they have constantly since day one talked shit about me I have never said any bad about them until recently, and now  I will forever be hated in his family  because of them, last thing I heard was about 5 months ago so my fiancé wants me to forgive them and move on. But I’m finding it extremely extremely hard to do. Do you think you could do it?

I find it hard to reply with a simple "yes" or "no". I have forgiven some major things in my life, but the very minimum that had to happen for me to able to do that was a true and heartfelt apology, followed by an obvious change in behaviour. Time alone never changed things for me. So if they never admitted to their wrongdoings and never apologized then no, I would not forgive them.

It would definitely be difficult and would depend if they’ve given you reason to. Have they apologized? Have they made any effort to show they’re done with that behavior?

You don't have to put up with that but try to be the better person after all that is his family and he shouldn't have to choose and you shouldn't have to put up with that. So maybe it's not about forgiving but about not forgetting and creating boundaries. If you don't want it to get in between the two of you then it's best to put it in the past.
