what is the point of a middle name?

I know they used to be used as family names, etc. but now days they are just decorative. Why even give them?

We use middle names to pass down family names that are more old fashion and we don’t necessarily want to use as first names. Also, it’s nice for when children are in trouble and they know once you use their full name. If you don’t want to give a middle name then don’t. It’s not required

Blake Robert-John (Robert my dad who passed and John my grandad who passed) 
For a girl

We named our daughter Evelyn Jean. Neither name are significant in our families. But we like them. They have a nice jingle together

I think it’s nice to use family names as middle names (eg to honour the child’s grandmother without them both having the same first name). It might also give the child another option for a name to use if they grow up and don’t like their first name.

My Grandma is in her 90s and still complains she doesn't have a middle name. It really bothers her that her mother never gave her one.
