Did you plan for a break up?

For all those couples currently or planning to live together, did you guys talk about what would happen in the unlikely event you break up? If so, how did you broach the topic? How did the conversation go too? 
My SO and I are planning to move in together soon, and I’m just wondering about how the logistics would go if we broke up (not that I want that to happen, but with living together I can see how it would complicate things a LOT)

Yes! Making a breakup plan is such a good idea. You may never use it which is great, but if you do need it, it’s one less thing to worry about in an already emotionally fraught situation.

Moved in three months ago together and actually super glad we had the conversation because we are both so unhappy right now. I approached the conversation like “I love you and I hope we never do but if we broke up what would we do?” It was a calm conversation he didn’t get mad or take it personal. Now that breaking up is actually on the table the stress of what would happen if we did is not there and I like that.

We haven’t talked about it and we live together. But we’ve never really talked about anything, it’s just sort of happened. He never asked me to be his girlfriend, he just sort of started calling me his girlfriend one day. He never really asked me to move in, I was spending the night every night already, so when his roommate was moving out, we just started moving my stuff in. It was weird. If we were to break up, I would take all the stuff I brought and he would keep his. The things we buy together, we will just decide when the time comes. My rule is whoever uses it more keeps it. I’d keep the blender because I use it more. He’d keep the lamps because I hate them and he picked them out even though we both paid. The couch, would just be how much I really wanted, but I’d probably just let him have it.

ive lived with 2 guys. both conversations were calm. usually laying together. talking about being together and the future. and id just calmly ask what if it doesnt work out? what would happen. and wed talk it out. because i had a messed up childhood i kept my things seperated and always packed for years and never had that much. i never had more things then what i could fit in my car. i also kept seperate finances. so basically when it was over i didnt have to wonder what was mine and they didnt have to wonder what was theres. wed just go our seperate ways. then one day i finally got more then what would fit in the car and unpacked.

I legit just told my fiancé that I get the dog and couch he can have the bed and one of the dressers. He said okay.

It’s going to feel odd, but just put it out there like you said. “In the unlikely event this doesn’t work out, what’s going to be the plan?” Don’t let the other person brush it off. Living together can be hard and shit happens. It’s a good cautionary measure for everyone on the lease.

I used to live with a friend in college, her boyfriend bought a house so we gave up our apartment and moved in with him. She had an agreement made up and signed off by a lawyer (she worked in a law office) saying that if they split the house belongs to him but he has to help her get set up in an apartment. I don't remember exactly what the terms were but I think he had to cover her first/last months rent and give her a certain amount towards furniture (they got rid of most of her stuff and kept his in the move).
They're still together so the agreement never was used but I thought is was genius on both sides.
It's awkward to talk about the possibility  of a break up it happens and it's up to you to cover your ass in case it does!!

I talked with my mom about it- I wasn’t thinking it would happen (and it didn’t) but mom wanted a contingency plan for me in the event something happened. We’re married now but I did have a small contingency plan originally.
