Positive for Strep B culture?

I’ve never been positive for the strep B culture. This is my fourth pregnancy and I tested positive. My doctor refuses to get back to me about it (I found out through my online medical reports before they ever called). So what exactly does this mean? I’m weeks from being due and my labors are so sudden and rapid that I’m supposed to be induced at 39 weeks to safe guard as I’m already dilated to a 2 and 50% effaced at 36 weeks. For some reason I feel a little embarrassed...anyone with experience with this have any stories about it? Healthy babies?

I tested positive for strep b with my son and he is perfectly healthy. In a nutshell, when you go in they will just have to put an IV in to give you medication so he doesn't contract it on the way out.

Strep b positive here and also very fast labour (2hrs on my first from first contraction). Baby ended up on a 48hr hold because I didn’t get enough antibiotic but everything was fine

I’ve been positive for GBS with all 3 of my deliveries and it was already found in my first urine culture at 10 weeks with this pregnancy, so I’m positive again 😔. For me it has caused issues, not because my baby contracted it and got sick, but because I delivered my second and third so quickly, within an hour of being at the hospital, that I did not get a dose of IV antibiotics in at least 4 hours prior to delivery. At both the hospitals in my city, all pediatricians will automatically draw a CBC and blood culture on baby when they are born if you don’t get those IV antibiotics 4 hours prior to delivery. Although my babies were both completely asymptomatic, we ended up with a one week and a 3 day NICU stay due to abnormal lab results because prophylactic IV antibiotics were recommended for baby due to be abnormal labs. We believe (and know for sure for our third baby’s, after the fact of course) that these were hospital lab errors and totally unrelated to me being GBS positive. Although I REALLY don’t want to be induced, I’m considering doing that this time to make sure I get the antibiotics and avoid the GBS issue at delivery completely. Hope that doesn’t scare you but since you mentioned quick deliveries, it’s definitely something to discuss with your doctor. I’d suggest also talking to the pediatrician and see if they have the same protocol as i mentioned about testing baby if you don’t get the antibiotics in time. Weigh your options and make your own decision. Every time I see this type of question asked on this app, almost everyone says it’s no big deal. For most it isn’t, but for me that hasn’t been the case and since you sound like a similar situation to mine (multiple deliveries, and quick ones), I thought I’d give you my take on it. This is my third pregnancy and first time I tested positive for step b as well.  Dr said they just give you antibiotics while in labor.  They said they normally like to get 2 doses, 4 hours apart, in before baby was born.  I told her I was concerned because with my second delivery, i wasnt at the hospital for 4 hours before she came out.  Dr didn't seem concerned and said the risk of baby getting it is really small.

I currently work in L&D; :) 
At our facility we administer Penicillin 5 million units for the first dose within one hour (unless you have medication allergies) then 2.5 units every 4 hours until delivery. We just hope to administer at least 2 doses, if not baby is monitored for 48 hours after delivery. They might administer your first dose before starting the induction in your case :) Good Luck!

It’s a bacteria found in the mother’s intestines. That if not treated the baby can inhale and catch it making the baby sick . They will give you antibiotics through the IV while you are in labor/giving birth . It’s common . The antibiotics will help prevent baby from catching it 👍🏼

They just give you antibiotics when you’re in labor through the IV it’s nothing serious even thought I read different things I have positive my first pregnancy and nothing ever happened my son is healthy

It's sooooo not a big deal hun. Try not t worry. GBS is a bacteria that's part of our normal healthy flora. It's present in about 20-30% of the healthy population. It's not a concern at all for an adult to have but can possibly be a concern for a newborn born to a Mom with GBS. So the recommendation is antibiotics in labour. I highly recommend a good quality probiotic because dealing with thrush/yeast right after baby is born SUCKS!!!

i had it with my second child and had to have antibiotics during delivery and i ended uo being allergic to it. they gave me benadyl and cintinued the antibiotics it was awful.

You will just need antibiotics when you go into labor, I tested positive for it in my last pregnancy but not with my first soooo idk what’s going to happen with this one but I’m going to ask for antibiotics regardless just Incase
