car seats and strollers??

okay so FTM here, have no clue what I actually need. I've been looking at the travel system strollers which I love, but then at target I was looking at the convertible carseats, but the reviews say those are heavy and pretty much meant to stay in place. what do you other mamas suggest? should I get both? or just one for now??

Yes, you are correct. Travel systems have the infant car seat that clicks into the stroller and into the base which stays in the car. Convertible car seats stay in the car. 
We used our travel system with the infant car seat until 7 months old when my daughter grew out of the height requirement. 
We switched to the convertible car seat at 7 months and it will last us for years. We continued to use the stroller from our travel system (without infant car seat). 
Technically you would only need the convertible car seat because it can be used from birth however I highly recommend the travel system. It’s so convenient to just click the car seat in and out especially if your baby is sleeping (which newborns do a lot). 
We had the Chico Bravo travel system and then switched to the Graco 4ever convertible seat after. I was happy with both of those 😊

convertibles stay in the car. I'm not a fan of them during the first 6 months and 98% of the time baby falls asleep in the carseat and waking baby up all the time will be hell. not to mention theres np where to put them in stores, places or restaurants etc unless you plan to baby wear them everywhere

I got a graco travel system (infant car seat, carry cot and pushchair) they all clip on to the frame. We used the car seat clipped onto the frame for most of the time tbh.. It’s sooo much easier if baby falls asleep in the car, you can just lift them out in the car seat and they can keep sleeping. 
I now have a convertible one for my 9 month old, she’s quite big so has been in it since 7 months but it is one that you can use from birth up to 4 years or something..

Convertible car seat is the one you’ll want to install and leave installed in the car. If you have 2 cars that means getting 2 seats. It’s possible to move it back and forth but they are a lot more work and it’s just not worth it. Plus the more often you move it around the more likely it is you will be in a hurry one day and it won’t be installed correctly, so one per car is the best with convertible seats. 
While most convertibles can be used from birth, a travel system with an infant bucket seat is far more convenient. Most kids out grown the bucket seat around 9 months to a year but for that time it’s totally worth it. And you will still use the stroller beyond that just without the car seat. 
If you have 2 cars and use a bucket seat, you can just use one seat and 2 bases (leaving a base in each car). 
Whichever you choose, do some research on car seat safety, read the car seat manual thoroughly, and consider having the seat installed or inspected by a certified car seat tech (many fire and police stations offer this  for free). Far too many car seats are either installed or used incorrectly.

My vote is for travel system at first. Babies sleep a lot. Getting them in and out of the car seat every single time you need to run in somewhere is a pain, especially if they’re sleeping. If you get a convertible - it stays in the car because it’s heavy and has no handle to carry it with. 
The travel system was just so much more convenient. If you can afford it, get the travel system and then worry about the convertible car seat later. We’re still using our infant car seat/travel system at 11 months because she is still within the height/weight limits.

I LOVE my graco travel system. its a lifesaver when they fall Asleep in the car and you don't want to wake them when you get them out of the car.
