When you converted to atheism/agnosticism

Question

I was wondering what people’s age and experience was like when they came out to their friends and family as atheist/agnostic. My mom said that I was “blind and would one day see the light of god” and she’d drag me to church when I was 12. How about you? I’m just wondering about how other’s experiences compare

I think I actually started calling my self agnostic around 15. Christianity wasn’t making sense to me and I was also going through some identity issues. At 17 is when I decided I was straight up atheist, and okay with it. I told my parents officially at 18, and they were pretty upset. My mom cried and my dad got pissed, but they’ve moved on.

My main household was never religious. So, when I went to church with my nana around the age 5-8 I would question everything and be really sceptical about what they were preaching. I'm glad I actually questioned instead of being brainwashed. I think that's a problem with religion, looking back and seeing all those kids' minds being polluted is terrible.

I don’t ever remember believing in a god.
I don’t remember “coming” out exactly either but I’ve had conversations with some of my family about religion. My family isn’t religious in general.

I’ve never believed, and though I did attend church with my step-family until I was 14. 
More recently my “coming out” has taken the form of not being married in the church and having to explain why I won’t be christening my baby.

I always never really believed christian religion but it was probably when I was about 11 when I really figured myself out religiously. (Im agnostic)

Never believed it.  When my parents first started to take us to church, it was already too late.  I already viewed a “god” as an equivalent to Santa and the Easter bunny. 
Parents swore they were real, what makes this “god” and different?

Would have left my parents' religion at 13 but didn't out of fear of my parents. 
Finally left at 19 as an agnostic and by 21 declared myself an atheist.

My mother wanted to raise me Catholic like her. My dad never voiced his religious opinions. When I was 14 I began having horrible panic attacks, the household became somewhat violent with my parents, I was cutting myself, and Id wake up with excrutisting gut pain that lasted for 8 hours. I would sob and pray for things to be okay. I got paranoid if I had a bad thought and hoped "god" wouldnt punish me with another painful panic attack. I wanted to die for so long. Not long after those times I decided to stop trying to make a so called "god" happy. To live my life however I wanted. To serve myself in a selfish yet selfess way. Im 24 now.

I went through a Pagan phase in high school and then was just anti religious for a while which blurred into atheism after having an atheist roommate. My husband and I both took that journey together in our twenties and all my friends are either also atheist or just don’t care. I never told my parents out loud but I think they suspected because when I did finally say it out loud after a near-death experience last year, they both just shrugged it off. They’re not church-going people anyway, they just vaguely believe in what they were indoctrinated into as kids.
