Is this spotting?

There's no pictures but I started my period today. I don't usually spot before my period but I jusr went to the bathroom and when I wiped it was gross. The spotting I guess you would call it was brown and had the consistency of melted chocolate. I've never had that happen or seen that happen before. Is that regular?
