What a baby REALLY needs when coming home from hospital?

Things you really need. Im cloth diapering and hoping to breastfeed for as long as possible.

clothes socks. laundry soap. bottles.  bathtub, a crib. or bassinet can get crib later on. u can wait on high chair till around 4 months. car seat a deff cant leave with out one. i liked having a swing personally not not a need.  but helps. blankets, wash cloths, baby soap, bibs, stroller. thermometer, diaper rash cream, baby meds. just in case. but can alwayd go out an buy some if needed

babies need just as much as you! food, shelter, clothes, a place to sleep, hygeine necessities...not too much as a newborn but they don't stay little forever :(

do yourself a favor and dont kill yourself to get a beautiful expensive nursery set up before the baby comes home. if it's an easy and stress free project, great. if it causes you any stress dont even bother. the baby will most likely not sleep in there for the first several months anyway. I feel like a lot of baby gear that are super popular are a complete waste of money. diaper genie, wipes warmer, floor play mats, bottle warmers, bottle sanitizers, baby breeza, and for the love shoes! shoes are super cute and fun and the baby kicks them off or they're impossible to get on their feet.

For the first three months cloth diapering it depends on what sort of diapers you use... AIO you may need as many as 16-20 to wash 1/2 every day & let dry. If using covers you can have just 3 to put over 16-20 fitted a or pre folds or whatever you are using inside.
For wipes: water alone is perfectly fine. Purchase a length of flannel, cut up an old sheet or use an old t-shirt cut into tissue-sized squares as wipes.
Some baby clothes, but if washing laundry every day anyway you can have only 2 or 3 gowns (excellent for nighttime diaper changes) and a few (3) shirts (long or short sleeved depending on where you live), 2 or 3 pairs pants - like baby sweat pants/Harem pants that leave space for that bowling ball bottom that comes with cloth diapers, and a baby sweater or two. 
Baby carrier of some sort, like a sling or a wrap. For itty-bitties the stretch wraps are excellent. 
If giving birth at a hospital, they will require that you have a car seat to take the baby home. 
The hospital normally provides a newborn kit that has a pack of disposable diapers, some cotton that should get you through the first sticky meconium poops, a thermometer, and a suction bulb.
For you: when nursing you may have some leakage or chapped nipples. Lanolin and 2 or 3 pairs reusable nursing pads should cover you. 
Keep it simple! If you're not smoking, don't drink and don't have substance abuse issues you should be able to safely sleep with baby. If in doubt, pull a drawer out of your dresser, put it on the floor with some blankets in it (make sure it's a firm -not hard - surface and everything is all tucked in securely) & it makes a great makeshift crib.

cradle/crib, cloth diapers and a pail, soap powder & nappy sanitiser, clothes, flannels, wipes, moisturizer/coconut oil, nail scissors, cotton wool, bibs, bathtub/top & tail bowl, muslins(there are never enough), bambeano(the best piece of kit we bought), baby carrier/sling(second best bit of kit we bought), cellular blankets,sleepsack, breast pump and milk storage bags,nursing vests, comfy lounge pants, snuggly dressing gown, cashmere socks, a nice candle and a Netflix subscription. finally someone to bring you endless cups of tea/water & cake.
