NT scan and genetic testing? Yay or nay?

Anyone have these done? Are they necessary? Could I skip these? I've heard don't do it and I've heard do it!

I did it due to my age and I'm glad I did. The results came back negative and it's less for me to worry about. I also wanted to be prepared if I was going to have a child with special needs. I see a frequent response on this subject of "We didn't do testing because we would keep our baby no matter what". Just because someone chooses to have all the information doesn't mean they won't keep the baby if there is a problem.

I did a genetic test because certain things run in my family but they just took blood from my arm like they would a regular shot or something! There wasn't a risk and I found out my baby was healthy with no issues and is a boy at 12 weeks! I wouldn't do anything else though. Especially the thing you do through your stomach. They just take a little blood.

We did the harmony test, which included a test for the sex if we wanted it. There was a lot of fluid behind babies neck and an abnormal herniation of the bowel. We saw this at the scan she performed before she took my blood. So then had a 10 day wait which was horrendous. Our doctor then called us with the results which were low, a 1 in 10,000 chance with a 99% success rate. At our next scan the herniation and most of the fluid had disappeared. I would have wanted to know either way.

I denied them. The only thing they will do if something comes up positive is make you worry to death and then most of the time Tehran they are born they are perfectly fine!

I wouldn't do the test. You can't be 'prepared' for a child with special needs - even when you know it before.... Nobody tells you that blood work is accurate by 99% - BUT ONLY for the tested issues ( about 25 or 30 it depends on the test).... The problem is: there is always a possibility that a Baby has issues that can't be found out before birth. Unfortunately that's the bigger group of issues.... Means: even if your test result is pretty 'good' by giving you a negative result for tested issues - there is always a minimal risk that your child will have something else... (0,00002%) you can't be SURE - even eith making the test.... Where although is the point to do it?

We will not be doing it. I am an insane worrier. If there is cause for concern at my 12 week ultrasound in 3 weeks then maybe. But as of now, my husband and I have both agreed to opt out of all  optional testing.

I did it and wish I hadn't. It caused more stress than anything else, and the rate of false positives is pretty high. My doc doesn't do a 12 week ultrasound so that's why I did it. Looking back, I should've just paid for a private ultrasound.

We did it largely to reassure ourselves that baby was still doing well. We had a miscarriage at 8 weeks at Christmas and having a scan at 12 weeks (and watching baby dance all over the screen) really helped calm my nerves.

I skipped the NT with my daughter but did the genetic testing because my husband insisted. This pregnancy I've skipped both. The tests are by no means required so it's 100% a personal decision that only you can make! For me I just don't care because I would never abort so the results are really meaningless for me. If you do care though or not knowing will stress you out more than knowing then it might be a good idea to have them done.

I did. :) We have a family history of Downs so we figure it would be better to know before birth if she had Downs so the Dr's could do their best after delivery. :) test came back negative though.
