how to cut off bottle?

ftm. my daughter just turned 1 a few weeks ago. The past week, I've been trying to cut her bottles off during the day. i give her a bottle before bed and in the morning. She doesn't sleep through the night yet and wakes up for bottles (at least twice). During the day, I've been trying to put her milk in her sippy cup.. But she only takes a few drinks. She's a thumb sucker and when I notice her sucking her thumb alot, I give in and give her her milk in a bottle. I feel like I'm going about this completely wrong. I don't want to "starve" her.. how do I do it?

Well,, she’s your baby so I’m only giving my opinion, but at one she doesn’t have to have a bottle at night period. She won’t starve during the night. It took us a week tops to wean ours off the bottle. Do it one feeding at a time. Keep whichever feeding is easier for you and get rid of the hard one first. You can do that several ways. WAter down the milk by night until it’s pure water. Or give less and less until you swap the bottle with a paci. We stopped cold turkey at 6 months and it was easy. But yours is older so it may be a little harder. Once the first feeding is gone wait a week and start weaning the second feeding. After the second is weaned wait 2 weeks before doing anything else. Just let them get get in the new routine. Once that’s good and settled (you may have a relapse it’s normal and okay😀) for the bottles we had a tippy Timmy or whatever and its like a bottle but a sippy cup. Also get the ones that look and feel like the bottle nipple. Since they are a year old you can switch to whole milk and yogurt. Start offering those options. The whole milk in the bottle stopped ours from the bottle all together I weaned her in a day 😂😂😂 she hates whole milk and loves yogurt so we do a serving of whole milk yogurt 3 times a day (doctors orders) but you basically wean the bottle like the night feedings. Or buy nipples for newborns which they will keep sucking and give up on. Offer more table food and less bottle time. Only give the bottle at the snacks and dinners. Leave the sippy cup available all day. If they are hungry they will eat! They also tell you when they are hungry. Mine will go to the fridge or cabinet and point we taught her “more” in sign language and ask her and if she does it she wants more food if not the she isn’t hungry. It’ll take about a month to do this. You HAVE to be consistent. Just because they sucking the thumb doesn’t mean they are hungry or thirsty!! It’s a security thing

My little fella loves his bottles. He will be 1 in 3 weeks. I have no intention of stopping the bottle. I do things to suit our family not by the book guidelines. He still has a dummy in bed too and if we go to the shops as he hates the shops. He associates his straw cup with water so he'd never take much milk from it. He associates the bottle with a cuddle and he loves that. I wouldn't feel guilty for giving her a bottle. Nothing wrong with a cuddle and a bottle. She won't be your baby forever. Maybe give a bigger bottle at night time or a milky cereal like wheatbix or cerelec to stop the night wakes, but not TOO close to bed time maybe 45 mins before hand.

If you haven’t already, introduce a sippy cup with water in it. Just to show her how to suck it, it’s the same motion as a bottle just a different feeling so she might find it weird at first. My son is almost 11 months, I just put him on whole milk (dont care if it’s recommended to stay on formula for 12 months he’s eating great and super healthy- this also helped him to eat more during feeds he hated he formula) anyways, now I give him his sippy during the day with small amount of orange juice or water, and when he’s 1 I plan on just putting his milk in there. Bed time will be a bit harder if she falls asleep while drinking her milk, my son doesn’t, he eats the whole thing then goes to sleep once he’s done, but I also don’t give him a bottle in bed and let him do it himself, he has NO interest in holding his bottle, but will hold his sippy cup so I’m not concerned. My son also still has a feeding at night (most nights), if he doesn’t have a night time feed he wakes up super early 5:30-6:30 and he’s up for the day. On nights where he has a feed he sleeps till 7:30 sometimes 8:30 if he’s really tired. So I think with that it might be a bedtime issue with him atleast. It’s also associating eating with sleep so when he wakes up he thinks he needs to eat to go back to sleep. We are sleep training soon, hopefully tonight. If you haven’t sleep trained yet, it’s to teach baby how to go to sleep on her own without sleep aids. For her she sucks her thumb so that’s a way of soothing herself, I’d honestly let her just do it. Feeding her when she sucks her thumb might be confusing her. To me thumb sucking or sucking on hands and fingers is only a hunger cue when they’re young young. There’s so many factors to this lol babys are all different, she might just be harder to wean off the bottle, and harder to get night time feeds out of the way. I believe my sons night time feed is 100% my fault for not sleep training sooner so it’s something I need to work on.

At this point, she shouldn't be needing middle of the night bottles. Our 13 month old hasn't had a middle of the night feeding since she was 5 weeks old. And giving a bottle just because she's sucking her thumb is a little odd to me lol I'm not sure why you do that, but it needs to stop before she makes a thumb to bottle association. And you're not starving her. If she's hungry, she'll eat/drink. As for how we made the transition, we introduced sippy cups at 6 months as recommended. We started with a basic Nuby sippy cup that had a nipple attachment so she looked at it the same as she would a bottle. Once she got used to it, we switched the nipple for the regular sippy cup spout. And then from there, we introduced other sippy cups. She was 100% bottle free by 9 or 10 months and then was completely off formula and onto whole milk by 12 months. So you need to establish some consistency here and stick with it.

Well feed her food and she doesn't need a ton of milk so a couple sucks from her sippy is fine. Use a sippy for night time too. Just do away with the bottle.

Research it. Research nighttime feeding weaning. There are tons of methods!!!!!! I’ve tried almost all of them to get mine to sleep through the night so I can speak for them that they are all safe! Also the feeding s a good schedule to go by: 9am breakfast 11:30 lunch 2pm:snack 5pm dinner

Actually we stopped at 4 months or whenever they recommend stopping night feedings. I went directly by the book with that. I also didn’t wake her I let her wake me.
