Do you believe kids should have summer reading?l

I know reading is important over the summer but at least in my state the give packets for them to write about the book they read. I know I’m a teacher, but I feel like they shouldn’t need it. Come on it’s summer they deserve a “summer vacation”. I know that it’s probably done to make sure they’re actually reading the book. But I just don’t think they should get a packet for it since it’ll feel like school work to them. My son will be 5th grade in September and he was a 60 Page math packet and he’s on a IEP (Individualized Education Program” and I asked the school if I or they could modify it for him and they said “no” and I’m like ok and hung up. I’m letting him do as much as he can do, if the school has a problem with it in September they can call me. 60 pages is a ridiculous amount to do in a few short months of summer! I like the superintendent a lot he’s a great guy, but he makes these math packets lots of pages. If it was 10-15 pages I’d be ok with that. I’m in this group on Facebook with a bunch of other parents and with in the last week I’ve seen Probably like 100 complaints about it. I’m not saying anyone needs to agree with what I’m saying, but if you have a different view of summer work great I’d love to read it in the comments! I respect all opinions even if I don’t agree with them.
