Beyond upset... I need a new OB

Melissa • 👶🏻 🎀 Baby Girl // Due 3/2/21 👶🏻 💙 Baby Boy // Born 10/4/18

I’ve been seeing my OB for almost 15 years. Just last week he informed me that as of July 1st he will no longer be delivering babies and will only be a gynecologist and wellness doctor (due to rising costs of malpractice insurance). I was devastated. I cried in his office and everything. (I’m 25 weeks).

He promised he’d give me a list of three doctors that he highly recommends. He even spoke to me about one of them in particular that he thought would be a good fit.

I calmed myself down. Researched the doctors and saw that the one he spoke to me about seemed like a great fit. I called to make an appointment today. (I received the actual list of doctors in the mail from him yesterday).

When I explained the situation to the receptionist, she asked how far along I was. I told her. She explained the do NOT take new patients beyond 12 weeks. 12 weeks!

I cried and cried all morning. As of right now I have no one to give me prenatal care in my third trimester. I know I haven’t tried calling other doctors yet (it’s Saturday and everyone except that doctor is closed)... but I can’t believe my ob recommended this particular doctor- without even reaching out to her? Checking to see her policy? I thought I’d have a better shot with her than with just anyone.

I fear that all of the good doctors in the area won’t take me on this late in the pregnancy. I’m so upset. I didn’t ask to be in this position. I have excellent insurance which I pay A LOT for. Before 12 weeks I could have had ANY ob I wanted. Now I will have to settle. Why wouldn’t my ob tell me MONTHS ago that he was doing this? He’s an extremely successful doctor and I know he didn’t come to this decision just recently.

Has anyone been in this position? Changing obs late unwillingly? Any success? Im in central NJ if that helps...

UPDATE:

On Monday I called another doctor I was interested in. I explained the entire situation to the receptionist and she scheduled me NO PROBLEM. Thank goodness I have an OB again! 😅 I’m still upset at my former OB... and I don’t understand why he would suggest a doctor that doesn’t take pregnant patients past 12 weeks! But at least now I can relax! Thanks for your input everyone!
