I've invested too much time... what do I do?

Background: I met this dude on OKC at the beginning of the year and we've been talking ever since. We recently went on a date and I thought things were going great... But I was confused on where we stood so I asked him. And this is what he said

I don't know what I should do from here. I should've listened to myself when I said this wouldn't end well and not to open myself up but I took the plunge anyway... I told him I'd be there for him as moral support but is it even worth it? As far as I knew, we were on the same page about wanting a relationship and I feel that if he wasn't feeling it he could've told me instead of keeping me around to stroke his ego. Should I just cut him off or should I just be friends with him? I've never done this before so I need help...
