Cord has to be centered?

I had an ultrasound a week ago and my doctor wants me to go to a fetal ultrasound specialist. They said the umbilical cord inserts into the placenta off centered, closer to the side. I’ve never heard of this and I’m wondering if anyone else knows anything about this. They said she’s normal size and everything looks good.

I have something similar happening with one of my twins except it’s a more serious version - cord is actually inserted outside the placenta and runs through membranes to the wall.  When it’s off center but still in placenta it is less serious.  My doctor said that it will require more monitoring but as long as baby is growing on schedule, it’s OK.  So far so good, but I am nervous.  Anxiously awaiting my next appointment to ask more questions and am trying to stay off google.

I have this as well. My doctor explain it as if the placenta is like a pizza and instead of my sons cord being in the middle it’s more so implanted in the crust. For this reason I have to have ultrasounds every 4 weeks but all has been great each time. Doc says it’s not to worry. I’m 30+1 as if today.

Thank you ladies for the input! They did say if they felt there was an “issue” I would have a monthly ultrasound to check growth. Glad to know it isn’t anything truly serious!

I had this with my last pregnancy and the main concern is babies growth. I had to have monthly ultrasound sounds and at the end I had one every week and a non stress test every week. It can cause compilations at birth depending on where the cord inserts. The baby can possibly pinch the cord during delivery. However I had no complications at all. Baby grew just fine and delivery was fine.  Don’t stress. My dr wasn’t that worried about it at all and just kept an eye on things.

I’m surprisingly not worried about it. I think I’m more curious as to why it’s an issue. I know I can google it, but I’d rather not stress myself out. lol
