Saying things out of anger is not an excuse. If this is the first time and he realizes it’s wrong and apologized then I’d move on from it. If this happens again, I would take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

People say things when they're annoyed, pretty sure me and husband have said ALOT worse to each other when we've had an argument, it's in the heat of the moment.

People get mad and express their anger in different ways. If this ends up being a continuous thing, that's when it's a problem. It becomes a habit, and not a good one. I'm sure he really is sorry. My husband had told me to shut up on a few occasions over the years when arguing, as I have him. It's generally when one is interrupting the other or just repeatedly saying the same thing. 
That doesn't make it "okay" but that doesn't make it not okay. If we were to talk to each other like that all the time, we wouldn't be together. We also rarely argue.

Sometimes i say things i don't mean and so does he. But i know he's just mad and when hes done being mad if he stopped then i know he didn't mean it. But if they are constantly being an a hole you need to leave.
