Where to go on vacation in the US as a European.

My husband and I planned a vacation to Cuba and Mexico for 6 weeks while I'm 20-26 weeks pregnant. My gynaecologist said I can go but I'm having second thoughts about it due to the Zika virus. We already booked our flights from Belgium - Cuba - Mexico - New York - Belgium. But we are considering just taking the flight from Belgium to Cuba and take a flight on the same day to the US to avoid Cuba and Mexico. And take our booked flight home from New York to Belgium 6 weeks later. But... where in the US should we go? We don't mind going different places and taking national flights. All sugestions are welcome!! Thanks!

If you're into history and culture, I'd recommend Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, or Chicago. In those cities, there are so many historical tours and sightseeing opportunities, that your trip essentially plans itself. 
If you're looking for pure scenic beauty, I suggest Lake Tahoe, The Grand Canyon, Great Smoky Mountains, or Northern California wine country. Lots of breathtaking sights, you couldn't go wrong with any of them.

Since you’re flying into NY, stick to places you can get to easily from there. Do NYC, pick only want you want to do as it’s a lot of walking. Then maybe go to Boston (you can get there by amtrack train) - I love Boston, such a pretty place and there is a lot of history there. You can get to Washington DC from there as well via train. If you’d like to see some beach like areas, there are some in Virginia (near DC) and farther down in North Carolina. 
You could even look at Maine and Vermont too- or into Canada too! So maybe start in NYC, travel down to the beach then go back up stopping in DC and then hit Boston, Maine, Vermont or Canada. 
That keeps you around places that are fairly easily accessible with train or a rental car but if you are interested in the whole of the USA, Savannah’s pretty, Florida has some great beach areas on the Gulf Coast, Denver, CO is always cool, Texas is fun, and California is huge! But most of those places would absolutely require another few flights which is why I suggested staying on the East Coast of the USA.
