University of Wyoming Slogan?

My brother plays football at the university of Wyoming and posted this on his feed. Apparently the university's slogan, "the world needs more cowboys" is being identified as sexist and racist along with the cowboy mascot. In my opinion I think this is a little too much.. 
Does this really offend people?

how is being a cowboy racist? think this is a bit of a stretch there. considering it's used to describe a man who tends cows. even crosses over into other languages. vaquero in Spanish which to my understanding is a respectable profession.

Cowboy is an occupation not a race and I'm all for using gender neutral pronouns and such but the if they are insisting I have to say cowperson I'm gonna have to respond with an eyeroll.

I’m personally not offended but I’m trying to be more understanding of those who may be. This reminds me, I was at the OB the other day and my husband and I said we liked the name Dakota, someone sitting a few chairs down told us how that name was racially offensive? I didn’t get it but she seemed strong on it 🤦🏻‍♀️

You’re never going to change the minds of them. Wyoming may be the “Equality State” as it was the first state to give women the right to vote before anyone else, they are still a good old boy state and are set in their ways. I have family in the state who will very much agree. 90% of this country doesn’t even know Wyoming exists until they go to Yellowstone or something happens.

Or could it be that the state of Wyoming only has one university in the entire state. They annually only get 4k applicants 95% of them accepted. So they are trying to recruit more students to the school. The surrounding states at one point allowed in state tuition to Wyoming residents cause they don’t have any other options.
