Iud insertion during period?

I was supposed to get the Mirena iud three weeks ago but...well, let's just say military hospitals suck. Anyways, my appointment is for Monday and it'll be right in the middle of my period and I've heard less and less doctors are willing to put it in during that time because of higher expulsion rates and there being no conclusive evidence that it makes insertion easier. I'm extra sensitive on my period and I feel like it'll be excruciatingly more painful, but at the same time I'm sick of waiting and I've been practicing abstinence for over a month and a half waiting for this iud.

My question is, did any of you ladies have yours put in during your period? Was it painful? I can only imagine how awkward it'll be, on top of the pain....
