what is this? in got it as a gift in baby shower

can anyone tell me what it is and what it can be used for? it is a small piece of clothing with a small Teddy in the middle. is it given for some good luck?? I am new to the states so i might be missing if it gifted in baby showers, please share your thoughts. 
also, please excuse me if it should not be posted here. please let me know some other group you think apt for such questions.

A baby blanket I use to carry mine around and suck my thumb. It’s a security blanket.

Hold it by the toy. Lbvs it’s like how you sleep with hubbys arm or scrunch up the blanket.

It's a security item as others have mentioned. from what I have been told, the stuffie in the middle is to help keep the child safe when sleeping with it. that sort of prevents the blanket from being able to be wrapped around the child's neck while sleeping and flipping around. It's still possibly but much less likely than with a regular flat blanket. my youngest brother did this with a flat blanket, so my parents had to get one with a dog head and front paws in one corner, and bum and other paws in the opposite corner that served the same purpose.
